ADI TEC Controller Chips for Optical Module Temperature Control
Product Specifications
A TEC controller holds a laser diode or another temperature sensitive part at a fixed temperature by driving current through a thermoelectric cooler in either direction. In a cooled DWDM or SFP+ module this is what keeps the laser wavelength on grid, because the emission wavelength of a DFB or DBR laser moves by a few tenths of a nanometre for every degree of temperature change. The models below cover integrated H-bridge drivers from 1 A up to 6 A as well as controller versions that drive external MOSFETs. All models are grouped into this single product, so you can send us the models and quantities you need in one enquiry.

Applications
Cooled laser and amplifier designs: DWDM and CWDM transmitters with EML or tunable lasers, cooled SFP+, XFP, CFP and CFP2 modules, EDFA and Raman pump laser temperature control, arrayed waveguide grating and optical filter stabilisation, high power laser diode stacks in industrial and medical systems, image sensor and CCD cooling, crystal oscillator ovens, and automated test equipment where the device under test has to sit at a fixed temperature. Together with the SUPERB PCB and SUPERB PCBA work we support, a cooler design can be quoted as one line item.
Features
Autonomous analog PID loops built from zero drift chopper amplifiers, so the temperature stays stable without firmware in the loop; direct TEC current control instead of voltage control, which removes current surges and stops the loop hunting when only a small amount of heating or cooling is needed; independent heating and cooling current limits; programmable maximum TEC voltage; TEC current, voltage and temperature monitor outputs for diagnostics and alarms; on-chip power MOSFETs in the integrated 1 A, 1.5 A and 3 A parts; ripple cancellation and single inductor architecture that keep switching noise away from the laser bias; switching frequencies from 500 kHz to 2 MHz for small external components; support for NTC thermistors as well as PTC RTDs; and temperature lock indication on most parts in the family.
Companion Chips
A cooled module also needs the laser driver (ADN2525, ADN2530, ADN2870, MAX3735, MAX3949), a TIA (ADN2880, ADN2882, ADN2820, MAX3266, MAX3267), a limiting amplifier (ADN2890, ADN2891, ADN2892) or a CDR with integrated limiting amplifier (ADN2812, ADN2817, MAX3872), and a microcontroller for calibration, alarms and digital diagnostics (DS4830, DS4830A, ADuC7020, ADuC841). Where the module is built in volume, SUPERB Assembly support covers the SMT build behind these parts.
