ADI and Maxim Optical Module Controller MCUs for Transceivers
Product Specifications
An optical module controller is the small microcontroller inside a transceiver that sets laser bias and modulation current, runs the TEC temperature loop, reads received power and temperature, and reports everything to the host over I2C. The parts below are the ADI and Maxim families used for that job. They put a fast multichannel ADC, 12-bit output DACs, PWM channels, comparators and a temperature front end on one chip, which removes most of the external analog circuitry around the optics. All models are grouped into this single product, so you can send us the models and quantities you need in one enquiry.

Product Details
Applications
Transceiver control and calibration: SFP, SFP+, XFP and QSFP module controllers, laser bias and modulation current setting through the DAC channels, TEC temperature control loops with H-bridge drive, receive power and temperature monitoring for DDM and DOM data, EDFA and optical amplifier control boards, optical channel monitors, and production test fixtures used to calibrate modules. Together with the SUPERB PCB and SUPERB PCBA work we support, a controller board can be quoted as one line item.
Features
One chip that combines the ADC, DACs, PWM, comparator and temperature front end a pluggable module needs; 12-bit and 13-bit conversion with multiple sample and hold stages, so bias, power and temperature can be scanned in the background while the core does other work; PWM outputs that can drive boost and buck DC-DC stages directly at up to 1 MHz; 4-channel TECC H-bridge control for the TEC drive on DS4830 and DS4830A; a master interface that talks to Maxim 3-wire laser drivers and a 400 kHz I2C slave interface to the host; an internal temperature sensor with 0.0625°C resolution plus support for two external sensors; low operating current that suits small pluggable modules; hardware CRC-8 for packet error checking on DS4830A; and JTAG, I2C or UART programming for production.
Companion Chips
A module built around these controllers also needs the laser driver (MAX3273, MAX3949, ADN2530), the TIA (ADN2820, MAX3267), a limiting amplifier or CDR (ADN2891, ADN2817), the TEC controller (ADN8833, ADN8834, ADN8835, MAX8521) and a power monitor (ADL5303, AD8305). SUPERB Assembly support covers the SMT build where the module is assembled in volume.
