Step-Down DC-DC Converter Chips for Industrial Power Rails
Product Specifications
Product Overview
Most embedded boards need three or four step-down rails, and the point of load converter is where efficiency, transient response and board area are decided. A converter that is one package and one inductor choice away from the original design is worth more than a marginally better specification, which is why the same parts stay on the BOM for years and why a shortage of one of them is a problem for the whole board rather than for one rail.
The parts below cover two approaches used on the boards we supply: the TPS5430 wide input family (5.5 V to 36 V, 3 A, 500 kHz) for 12 V and 24 V industrial rails, and the TPS62x / TPS821xx DCS-Control family for point of load rails where efficiency at light load and a small solution size matter. The TPS82130 and TPS82140 are modules with the inductor integrated in the package, which removes the inductor selection and the loop compensation from the layout.
All models are grouped into this single product, so a power tree can be quoted in one line, including the inductor, the input and output capacitors and the feedback network for each rail.

Key Features
Wide Input Range In One Line – 5.5 V to 36 V and 3 V to 17 V parts in the same order, covering 24 V industrial buses and 5 V point of load rails without changing supplier.
Integrated Inductor Modules – The TPS821xx family puts the converter and the inductor in one package, which removes inductor selection, loop compensation and a large part of the layout risk.
Light Load Efficiency – Automatic power save mode and ECO-mode parts keep quiescent current at tens of microamps, which is what a battery backed controller actually needs.
Small Solution Size – Switching frequencies from 500 kHz to 2.5 MHz allow small output capacitors and shields the switching band away from sensitive analog and RF sections.
Protection Built In – Cycle by cycle current limit, hiccup mode restart, thermal shutdown, undervoltage lockout and power good signalling on the parts that need it.
Multiple Package Options – The same device in SOIC, WSON, VQFN and module packages, so a substitute can often be found without changing the board outline.
Thermally Enhanced Options – PowerPAD and module packages with a low thermal resistance path for converters that run close to their current limit in a sealed enclosure.
Applications
Rails and boards where these converters are specified: A whole power tree can be quoted as one item, alongside the SUPERB PCB and SUPERB PCBA work we support for the board that carries it.
Industrial Control And PLC Rails – 24 V bus step-down to 5 V and 3.3 V on controllers, I/O modules and motor drive control sections.
Networking And Telecom Line Cards – Point of load conversion for FPGAs, PHYs and processors, where high switching frequency and low output ripple are the main constraints.
Instrumentation And Medical Equipment – Low noise rails for analog front ends, where the converter has to stay out of the measurement band.
Battery Backed And Standby Rails – Modules and low quiescent current parts for always on rails that must not drain a battery or a supercapacitor.
Sourcing and Cross-Reference
Converter substitution is more forgiving than memory or sensor substitution, because the package and the pin out are usually the only hard constraints; the feedback network can be recalculated. What cannot be assumed is the loop behaviour. We therefore list the input range, the current rating, the switching frequency, the compensation scheme (internal or external) and the pin out together, so it is clear whether a proposed alternative can be dropped in or whether the compensation and the inductor have to be rechecked.
When a rail is short we also look at the module parts, because replacing a discrete converter plus an inductor with an integrated module keeps the rail running while the original part is on allocation. This is normally the fastest way to keep a board in build without a new layout.
SUPERB Assembly support covers the SMT build of the power section where the board is assembled in volume.
Q: Can you propose pin-to-pin alternatives when a converter or module is on allocation?
A: Yes. Send the rail specification and the quantity and the SUPERB Tech sales team will propose pin compatible alternatives with the compensation and inductor implications stated.
Why Source Step-Down Converters from Superb Automation?
- Power Management Group: Converters, LDOs, gate drivers and TEC controllers handled as one group, so the whole power tree can be quoted together.
- Alternatives With The Trade Offs Stated: Compensation scheme, inductor value and pin out compared, not just the headline current rating.
- Allocation And Obsolescence: Long lead time and end of life positions handled with last time buy planning and module alternatives where a discrete part is unavailable.
- Thermal And Package Accuracy: Package suffixes and thermal pad variants quoted explicitly, because they decide the achievable output current in a real enclosure.
- Small And Large Quantities: Prototype quantities for a new power tree and production quantities for an existing one are both welcome.
- Right First Time Documents: Data sheets, package drawings and marking information supplied with the quote when a design review needs them.
