The Classic1008: Where Every SMT Board Begins

If there's one machine on the SMT line that sets the ceiling for quality, it's the stencil printer. You can have the world's best pick-and-place and reflow oven — but if the solder paste isn't printed correctly, you're building scrap.

The Classic1008 automatic stencil printer is the first station on our 7-line SMT floor. With a maximum printing area of 400mm × 340mm, it handles everything from compact IoT sensor boards to mid-format industrial controllers.

How It Works

A laser-cut stainless steel stencil — typically 0.1mm to 0.15mm thick — is aligned over the bare PCB. Solder paste (SAC305 lead-free as standard) is rolled across the stencil surface by a metal squeegee blade. Paste is forced through the apertures onto the PCB pads. The stencil then separates cleanly, leaving precisely metered paste deposits on every pad.

Alignment accuracy: ±25μm. That's one-quarter the width of a human hair. At that tolerance, even 0.4mm-pitch QFP and 0201 passive footprints print cleanly.

Why It Matters

Solder paste printing is responsible for an estimated 60-70% of all SMT defects. Bridges, insufficient solder, solder balls — most trace back to the printer. By investing in the Classic1008 and pairing it with our S8080 3D SPI system (which inspects every pad before placement), we catch printing defects at the source.

The economics are straightforward: fixing a printing defect costs $0.01 at the printer, $0.10 after pick-and-place, $1.00 after reflow, and $10.00+ if it reaches the customer. The Classic1008 is the cheapest insurance policy in our factory.

Pairing with 3D SPI

No printer is perfect — stencil wear, paste rheology changes, and environmental factors all affect print quality over time. That's why every board exiting the Classic1008 passes through our S8080 3D SPI machine (see equipment #2), which measures paste volume, height, and area on every single pad. If a pad is outside spec, the line stops. The board never reaches the pick-and-place machines.
